What is difference between liquid silica gel and solid silica gel?

1. Liquid silicone

Liquid silica gel is a kind of solid high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber. It is a liquid gel with good fluidity, fast vulcanization, safer and environmental protection, and can completely meet requirements of food grade.

2.Solid silica gel

Solid silica gel is a kind of saturated polymer elastic material, which has characteristics of high temperature resistance, cold resistance, solvent resistance, anti-sticking resistance, anti-sticking, electrical insulation, chemical resistance and has a wide application range.

Comparison of liquid silica gel and solid silica gel

1. Shape

a. As name suggests, liquid silica gel is in a liquid state and has fluidity;
b. Solid silica gel is solid and has no fluidity.

2. Security

a. Liquid silicone is a highly transparent and safe food-grade material. It does not add auxiliary materials such as vulcanizing agents during molding, is sealed and molded.
b. Solid silica gel is a transparent and environmentally friendly material. It requires vulcanizing agent for vulcanization molding time during molding.

3. Forming method

a. Liquid silicone is injection molded liquid silicone rubber (LSR), vulcanization equipment is an injection molding machine.
Injection molding machine has a very simple process flow (no need for manual processes such as batching, rubber mixing, cutting, and placing in high-temperature glue process, only one worker needs to take product), product has high accuracy (all manual procedures are replaced by machine before molding), high output (A/B gel mixed at a certain temperature for a few seconds), labor saving, electricity saving, material saving and many other advantages, can produce all products produced by high temperature gel.
b. Raw material for solid silicone rubber mold is solid. After being mixed by a kneader, cutting machine cuts product to appropriate size and thickness of mold, puts it into mold, presses it at a certain temperature under pressure molding machine. It is similar to plastic products when demolding, and it also needs to clean mold.

Silicone products are mainly divided into following six molding methods:

Liquid silicone 

1. Molding

Compression molding is the most common manufacturing process. It is mainly completed by mold. Shape of mold determines shape of silicone product. Molded silica gel products are usually made through high temperature molds after adding solid silicone raw materials added with vulcanizing agent, then apply pressure through a vulcanizing machine to form solids at high temperature. Hardness of molded silicone is usually 30° -80°. This manufacturing process is relatively simple and suitable for all silicone products.

2. injection

This process is relatively high in quality and is a combination of liquid silicone and plastic.
Its products show good thermal stability, cold resistance, excellent electrical insulation properties, will not produce toxic substances during combustion.
Therefore, it has become an irreplaceable material in production design of health products, automobiles, baby products, medical supplies, diving supplies, kitchen appliances and seals.

3.Solid state transfer

In processing of solid silicone products, reinjection process has a similar processing method to that of liquid, but it is same as solid production method. Same machine and raw materials are used, but mold is same as liquid silicone mold. It is mainly extruded and fed to root of product. In this way, same solid silicone hardness can be used, which is strongly squeezed into cavity and molded by pressure of machine, but it is naturally not as good as its liquidity compared to liquid silicone materials.
Advantage of this processing method is that product can avoid a lot of poor appearance and good control of parting line. It is mainly for some customers to avoid some aesthetic appearance and product quality problems. It also has many disadvantages, such as large amount of gel, high cost, and complex processing. It is necessary to add a mold middle plate and manually lift mold core. Manpower is large, and processing efficiency of product is low, so this is also one of reasons why few silicone products manufacturers use this processing technology!

4. Extrude

Extrusion molding. Extruded silica gel products are usually extruded by extrusion machines. Generally, shape of extruded silica gel is long, tube can be cut at will. Shape of product made by extrusion process is relatively single, and most of it is strip. Silicone tube is widely used in medical and mechanical equipment fields. It can also be used as a buffer in packaging materials.

5. Calendering

Silicone rubber is kneaded and mixed with carbon black, silicone oil to form a kneaded rubber, then rolled out to form a sheet.
Film produced by calendering has obvious differences in physical and mechanical properties in longitudinal and transverse directions, which is called calendering effect. Specifically, longitudinal tensile strength of film is greater than horizontal direction, elongation at break of film is greater than longitudinal direction, longitudinal shrinkage of film is greater than transverse direction.
Calendering effect is result of orientation of macromolecules and needle-like, sheet-like complexing agents in rubber compound along rolling direction during rolling process. Size of rolling effect is related to composition of rubber, rolling temperature, speed, and speed ratio.

6. Perfusion

Operation method of filling mold: Filling mold is used for relatively smooth or simple products. There is no mold line to save labor and time, which is to surround product or model you want to copy with a plastic or glass plate. Then, pour vacuumed silicone directly onto product. After silicone is dried and formed, take out product and mold is formed. (Note: Filling mold is generally made of relatively soft silicone. This makes it easier to remove mold without damaging product inside silicone mold.). It is a combination of solid and liquid, suitable products such as mobile phone cases, sex toys, etc.

7. Coating

Fast vulcanization; strong adhesion; good fluidity and easy defoaming. Catalyzed by platinum complex, non-toxic and odorless; excellent thermal stability and cold resistance (using temperature -60℃ ~ 200℃). After molding, it has good air permeability, heat resistance, and certain tensile strength;
Excellent anti-skid performance; no pollution; low hardness; firm gel bonding. High tear resistance; high transparency; good tensile properties. Wear-resistant, washable, and high-temperature resistant; high three-dimensional layer, fabric is smooth, soft, flexible and excellent in texture, good elasticity, washable and dry cleaning
Applied to cloth, it has anti-aging effect. Such as silicone gloves, rain boots and so on.

How to distinguish between liquid silicone and solid silicone products

1. Liquid silicone products

High transparency, no odor, product has a plastic injection port.

2. Solid silica gel products

Low transparency, vulcanizing agent or other fragrance covering vulcanizing agent, product has no injection port.

Application field

Liquid silicone

Generally used in baby products, kitchen supplies, and medical supplies. It can directly contact food and human body.

Solid silica gel

It is generally used in daily necessities, industrial miscellaneous parts, and automotive accessories, and has a wide range of applications.
